Mother Of Slain Philly Police Officer Remembers Son's Life At DNC

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – In a tribute to fallen police officers, the mother of a local hero took to the DNC stage to share with the world memories of her son.

Wayne Walker is the mother of Officer Moses Walker Junior. Officer Walker was a 19-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police force, before he was shot multiple times in 2012 as he was on his way home from work.

Standing atop of the DNC stage, Wayne reminisced on the kind heart of her son.

"In Moses' living room I found a pile of Christmas presents, it was in August. For Moses, he always thought ahead. He bought gifts for relatives, for single parents, for strangers down on their luck, one of these presents didn't even have a name on it," she said. "I still have it."

According to his family, in addition to being a police officer, Walker was a deacon at a church, and he planned on retiring one year after his untimely death. After nearly 20 years with the department and the city, they say Walker was already counting down the months.

At his funeral, the entire community gathered as he was honored in a procession by police in North Philadelphia.

But in Wayne's speech she acknowledged that while he didn't live long enough to give all the gifts he had to give, there is still hope for the future.

"While were here we must do the good we can," she said. "We have to believe that were stronger together."
