'I'm Leaving The Democratic Party'...Last Day Of DNC Brings Final Tour Of Protests

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The final day of the Democratic National Convention brought a final tour of protests. DNC demonstrators gave parting shots before packing their gear and leaving town.

An afternoon rainstorm drove away the already thin crowds that gathered near City Hall for separate demonstrations. It was, perhaps, a fitting end to a frustrating week for legions of protesters who came from all over the country, hoping against hope to induce revolutionary change within the Democratic Party. Instead, Occupy DNC urged followers to sign ballots announcing their exit from the party.

"We have these little ballots we made up. It's sort of figurative. And then everyone is writing down their name, their state and their email. And at the top it says 'I'm leaving the Democratic Party,'" organizer Laurie Cestnick of Massachusetts explained. "It doesn't mean we're not going to vote. We know enough that democracy was stolen. Our voices aren't being heard in that party. And we have to move on."

Cestnick brought tens of thousands of people to Philadelphia through a Facebook page she created several months ago.

"It's just been very disheartening," she said. "People ask,'why would you allow Trump to win by not voting for Hillary.' You know, this lesser of two evils thing is as bad as it gets. That's a gun to your head."

The page attracted more than 30,000 followers. And Cestnick says there would have been a lot more if not for a hacking, dirty trickster.

"This infiltrator created our site on Facebook to look exactly the same, created copies of every single state page that we had, named it the same," she said. "People didn't know where they were. They'd sign up on these other pages and he would delete them all."

Occupy's post convention focus now is on a possible third-party insurgency that will have an impact on the 2020 election.
