VP Joe Biden At DNC: '21st Century Is Going To Be The American Century'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Vice President Joe Biden took the stage on Wednesday night to address the Democratic National Convention. Biden opened the speech by touting the legacy of the Barack Obama administration. Biden thanked the delegates for the eight years that he spent as the vice president of the nation and called President Obama, and the Michelle Obama, family.

"He is the embodiment of honor, resolve and character," Biden said of Obama, calling him, "one of the finest presidents we have ever had."

He also addressed Michelle Obama, saying, "I don't know where you are kid, but you are incredible."

Biden was introduced by his wife, and the second lady, Dr. Jill Biden.

After asserting the success of the Obama administration, Biden emphasized his hope that Clinton could pick up the mantle. "Everybody knows she's smart, everybody knows she tough, but I know what she's passionate about," Biden said of Hillary Clinton.

Biden turned his attention to Republican nominee Donald Trump. He attacked him based on one of the phrases that Trump has made famous, posing the question of how could anyone find pleasure in saying the phrase, "you're fired."

"He's trying to tell us he cares about the middle class," Biden said. "That's a bunch of malarky. This guy doesn't have a clue about the middle class. Not a clue."

He used that rationale to justify that Trump cannot be in line with middle class values. "Ordinary people like us, can do extraordinary things," Biden said. "The 21st Century is going to be the American Century."

Biden also attacked Trump in terms of national security. "No major party nominee in the history of this nation has ever known less or has been less prepared to deal with our national security," the vice president said.
