Presidential Candidate Jill Stein: 'Surrogate Mother' For Sanders Supporters Not Ready To Vote Hillary

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Since they can't vote for Bernie and many won't vote for Hillary, some Sanders supporters are opting for Jill Stein.

The Green Party presidential candidate has become in her words almost a "surrogate mother" for many sanders supporters who are not ready to lend a vote to Hillary Clinton.

"They feel betrayed particularly by the Democratic Party which sabotaged their efforts," explained Stein from inside her headquarters in South Philadelphia.

This is Stein's second consecutive run for the top office under the Green Party and they are the thousands of Senator Sanders supporters who have taken to Philadelphia to protest apparent favor given to Clinton by the Democratic Party.

"I want to assure them they don't have to abandon ship here we can keep going stronger and louder," said Stein.

Last night at a Stein rally it became clear that some are now turning to her to continue the Sanders revolution haulted by Clinton's official nomination.

When asked whether she was disapointed by Sanders and his endorsement of Clinton:

"Uh I think I was disappointed a long time ago," Stein responded.

"Whoever the Bernie or bust people are voting for Jill will be offset I think by the Republican Party voting for Gary Johnson because he is libertarian," said Daid McKell, a professor of political sociology at Northern Arizona University. McKell is a Sanders-turned-Hillary supporter who has studied the impact of third party candidates of past general elections.

He and Stein feel that a third or fourth party vote does not necessarily mean a vote towards the opposing party -- but many still argue that.

The Sanders protests this week have drawn a lot of attention. Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson is reportedly now headed to Philadelphia and plans to hold an event tomorrow.

Specific details have not been announced at this point.
