NJ Transit Board Approves Final 2 Rail Union Contracts
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Transit's board has approved contracts with its two remaining rail unions.
Unions representing locomotive engineers and conductors voted to ratify the contracts within the last week. They were approved at a special board session Wednesday afternoon.
The other nine rail unions signed contracts after a tentative agreement was reached in March, about a day before a deadline for a strike that could have wreaked havoc for commuters in the New York region.
The rail unions had been working without a contract for about five years. NJ Transit officials had previously said fares might have to be raised to cover the costs associated with the new contracts, but no increases have been announced.
