DNC Delegates Pitch In On Art Project
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Democratic National Convention delegates from several states took part in a colorful party-sponsored service project at the Convention Center, helping to create two murals that'll be installed in Center City and Southwest Philadelphia.
The volunteers teamed up with members of the Mural Arts Program and the Youth Violence Reduction Partnership.
It was paint-by-numbers on a grand scale as around 100 apron-wearing paint brush-wielding volunteers worked on six by six foot cloth squares.
Mural Arts Program Executive Director Jane Golden says it's a terrific opportunity:
"I'm very excited about the DNC, and we're proud to be part of it because the eyes of the nation and the world will be on Philadelphia. And we want people to of course see what a great city Philly is, but we also want people to know how much we value the arts, and community, and young people."
Alaska state Democratic chair Casey Steinau says it's a chance to live one of the party's core values.
"Those of us who are here actually get to give to the community which was kind enough to host us, which I know is a big deal to host a meeting like this. It's hard on the city, and I think anything we can give back is really important, and this is really great -- something that we're gonna see for a really long time."
