Philadelphia Latino and African American Communities Work To Build Bridges
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia Latino and African American communities are celebrating the anniversaries of two organizations by coming together.
Rev. Luis Cortes is president of Esperanza, the group is participating in several events during the Democratic National Convention, but to kick it off, they are teaming up with the African American Museum to unite Blacks and Latinos around common issues.
"Lack of representation and lack of economic opportunity, but we also want to celebrate the thing that brings us together and that's art music and culture," he said.
Afro-LatinX: An Evening of Art & Music will feature Latin Jazz and R&B Performances, art in two galleries, food and more for at the African American Museum.
Cortes said he's hoping the two communities can come together and vote.
"How do we appropriate our positions as citizens of the city of brotherly love."
He said it is time to get the ball rolling.
"It's time that the African American and Latino community begin a dialogue."
The free event is from 4 to 7 on Sunday.
