Local Residents Get A Sneak Peek Of DNC Stage At Open House

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (CBS) As the DNC anticipates the arrival of delegates in Philadelphia next week, why not hold an open house for the locals?

The line of people outside the Center looked like the typical crowd for a hockey or basketball game, but they were talking politics and civic pride. They were led into the arena in batches of 100 at a time. During sound checks, more red, white and blue balloons were inflated and hoisted to various spots, as the public was able to check out convention hall.

Several were volunteers, who will be stationed elsewhere during the DNC run. Among them Tanya Granger of Abington.

'I wanted to see how it was transformed,' she said.

She said while HD TVs are nice and make you feel like you are there, nothing beats the excitement of the building.

'Exactly, I wanted to see it up close, in person, and get a perspective.'

Lynn Yeakel brought a group of people, as the director of the Institute for Women's Health and Leadership at Drexel University. She said with Hillary accepting the Democratic nomination for president Thursday night, history is being made again in Philadelphia.

'I ran for the US senate. It was my first political adventure in 1992, which was called 'The Year of the Woman.' I think we finally really have a year of the woman, this year."

He's not able to vote yet, but 17-year old Ben Leusner of Washington Township was excited to be in the arena.

'I'll tell my friends i saw them set it up, which is kind of like the calm before the storm,' the young soon to be voter said.

As the DNC anticipates the arrival of up to 50,000 convention participants, they thought it fitting to invite members of the community to see the final product.
