DNC Road Restrictions Begin Friday Night

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- DNC traffic restrictions begin on Friday night.

Most of the closures will be taking place near the Wells Fargo Center. When it comes to city streets, it will begin on motorcades and police activity.

When it comes to PennDOT, they have a game plan that is already in motion.

The first adjustments for the convention begin at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 22. The I-95 exit ramps to Broad Street will be closed for the next week. South Broad, from Packer Avenue down to the Navy Yard, and the roadways surrounding the Wells Fargo Center and FDR Park, will be closed off as well. That will take effect at noon on Saturday and continue through to next Friday.

Also as of noon on Saturday...

"Any vehicles over five tons will be prohibited from traveling on nine miles of I-95 from exit 13, down by the Philadelphia International Airport to exit 22, which is the interchange with interstate 676," said PennDOT spokesman Gene Blaum.

Detours will be in place for vehicles over five tons.

From the PennDOT command center, some relief was expressed that this event would be far more isolated then say, the Pope's visit.

"We're certainly hoping for a quiet travel week," Blaum said. "But, we'll be prepared to work with emergency responders if necessary to expedite the response."

PennDOT is recommending to plan ahead if traveling with a reminder that closures will be mostly confined. "All of the highways are open to all passenger vehicles," Blaum explained.

PennDOT will also be suspending their construction projects throughout the week.
