Clinton Picks Kaine, But Was It Political Or Strategic?

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- So what kind of impact will Virginia Senator Tim Kaine have as Hillary Clinton's running mate?

Solid and safe, that's the way Franklin and Marshall College Poll Director Terry Madonna described the choice of Senator Tim Kaine. Madonna points to Kaine's political experience as a big plus.

"Local level - Richmond Mayor, Lt. Governor, Governor, now Senator," he said. "He's on the Senate foreign relations committee. Some of that experience will serve him well. He's popular amongst colleagues."

Madonna said Kaine is a bit more conservative than Hillary Clinton, and disagrees with her on certain issues like trade, but he doesn't see him as a game-changer or drawing any votes over from conservatives. He also said Kaine isn't very well known nationally, much like his Republican counterpart.

Madonna said the thing to watch now is how extremely liberal Democrats will react to the selection.
