Trump Aide Offers Resignation In Melania Trump Plagiarism Incident

CLEVELAND, OH (CBS) -- A woman named Meredith McIver is taking the blame for the portion of the Melania Trump speech lifted from Michelle Obama's speech.

McIver says she's a staff writer at the Trump Organization and was working with Melania Trump on her speech.

She asked Melania who inspires her, Melania mentioned Michelle Obama.

McIver says Melania read her passages from some speeches by Mrs. Obama, she jotted them down, and the mistakenly ended up in the speech.

Terry Madonna, with F&M college, says it's an understandable mistake though reflects poorly on the campaign.

"These are the kind of mistakes in a sense are quite amateurish but understandable. You do expect at the presidential level for these occurrences not to take place."

Madonna says this likely puts the story to bed.

McIver says she offered her resignation but it was rejected, Donald Trump calling this an innocent mistake.
