'Ghostbusters' Challenges 'The Secret Life of Pets' At Box Office
By Bill Wine
Those big-box-office pets still have what it takes.
The hit animated comedy, 'The Secret Life of Pets,' made it two weekends in a row in first place by earning an estimated $51-million on its second weekend in theaters. But not far behind was the debuting comedy remake, 'Ghostbusters,' with Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, which took in $46-million.
And rounding out the top five were three holdovers – 'The Legend of Tarzan' with just over $11-million, 'Finding Dory' with $11-million, and 'Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates' with $8-million.
As for the weekend's other new mainstream release, 'The Infiltrator,' the thriller starring Bryan Cranston, it earned $5-million, good for eighth place.
Overall, industry-wide totals were respectable, but still well below those of last weekend and those of a year ago.
