Art And Politics Intersect On Broad Street For DNC Convention

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- You may not be going to the Democratic National Convention, next week, but if you hang around Center City, you will definitely be entertained.

The torrent of music, dance and drama will be at seven locations, from the Academy of Fine Arts on North Broad, to Brandywine Plaza on South Broad. The more than 30 groups will play throughout the city from Saturday till Thursday. This will be funded with 80-thousand dollars from the Knight Foundation.

Vice president Victoria Rogers says they want delegates to know the city is rich not just in history.

"We want them to see and experience a city defined by arts and culture, to get a taste for Philadelphia artists and art organizations who year round make Philadelphia one of our most exciting cultural communities."

Maud Lyon of the Cultural Alliances says it's the perfect opportunity.

"Arts and culture is a cornerstone of American democracy," Lyon said.

The acts feature everything from bagpipes to funk. Therese Steven is with a Japanese drum group.
