NJ Residents React To Trump Reportedly Skipping Over Gov. Christie For VP

CHERRY HILL, N.J. (CBS) -- Now, more than halfway through his second term as the Governor of New Jersey, New Jerseyans have very strong opinions about Governor Christie.

With the news that he's not likely to be selected as Donald Trump's running-mate as vice president, love him or hate him, Governor Christie does not appear to be going anywhere.

"I think we just saved the American people a lot of hassle," said Selina Taylor.

News that Christie will not likely be chosen received mixed reactions on Thursday as poll after poll shows that most people disapprove of the job he's done in the Garden State.

"It's a lot of things that he did that a lot of people didn't approve of, but that's fine, I mean, he didn't get picked. Oh well," said Desirre Pittman.

"It be nice if Governor Christie finished what he started here in New Jersey," said Mark Reed of Cherry Hill. "There's a lot still that needs to be done with the Camden Waterfront, with healthcare system and so again it's nice that Christie was considered, but it's nice that he's going to be able to finish the job."

It was just over a year ago when Christie announced that he was running for president. After a disappointing finish in the New Hampshire primary, he backed out of the crowded GOP field and quickly backed Trump.

"I feel like at the time, he took away from New Jersey to go on his presidential run. It was horrible. New Jersey needs a lot of work. There's so many things," said Taylor.

Many speculated that Christie had his eyes on vice president. Others thought that because of his experience as a U.S. attorney, another cabinet position like attorney general would be a better fit.

"To see him still involved with the Trump campaign tells me that he's looking to get in there as someone of more of the capacity they came from," said Chris Peary. For now, his top office remains the one he holds as governor of New Jersey.

Governor Christie's press office did not reply to our request for comment. Governor Christie has said repeatedly that his support for Trump had nothing to do with aspirations to become vice president.
