Local Church Aims To Bridge Gap Between Police Officers And Community Through Worship

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- As tensions flare between police departments and communities across the country, a Montgomery County church looks to bridge the divide.

At LaMott AME Church on Cheltenham Avenue in Elkins Park, the special guest during the Sunday morning service was Officer Jason Thompson of Cheltenham Police.

The white officer stood and graciously accepted a standing ovation from the African American crowd.

With rising tensions locally and across the country, LaMott Pastor Reverend Lewis Attles, invited the officer to symbolize peace and understanding.

"Calling them here today lets them know we do appreciate your service. We still need your service,"Reverend Lewis Attles preached. "We still love and respect you."

Attles says he gets it, some in the black community may not trust police. and the officers, operating with a similar fear, may not fully trust them.

But he has faith hearts, minds and actions can change.

"Combat feat with faith, hope and love."
