How Paige Selenski Is Preparing For The Summer Olympics

People For field hockey star and Olympian Paige Selenski, the road to Rio begins right here in Philadelphia.

When ESPN The Magazine approached Paige Selenski about appearing in the Body Issue last year, the All-American field hockey forward and 2012 Olympian was skeptical. Picture-perfect physique or not, the shoot's wardrobe included little more than a strategically placed field hockey stick. "It was a vulnerable piece and kind of risky," says Selenski, who still calls Lancaster County home and grew up going to Phillies games and making cheesesteak runs with her dad. "But, ultimately, the story allowed me to showcase our sport." With that model moment behind her, Selenski now has her sights set on another star turn: a second appearance at the Summer Olympics. Training at this level is nearly a full-time job, she says, with six days a week of weights, conditioning, yoga, and double practice sessions. But after five years on the US National Team and competitions around the globe under her belt, Selenski, who has been playing field hockey since she was 10 years old, knows what it takes to win. "The last Olympics was incredible—I was a bit starstruck," admits Selenski, who finds out whether the US Women's National Team will advance to the Olympics when announcements are made in July. "This time I won't be as focused on the big picture. It's about what you need to do to win a medal."
