Summer Camp Teaches Young Kids The Importance Of EMS

By Jim Melwert

NARBETH, Pa. (CBS) -- Narberth Ambulance hosted a different kind of summer camp – this one focused on emergency medical services and first-responders.

Twenty-nine children ages 10-14 got a behind the scenes look at EMS this week at the Narberth Ambulance EMS summer camp.

"We just built a foundation and hopefully they'll either want to volunteer or do it as a career. Or at least know what truly goes on behind an ambulance, it's more than just a truck going up and down the street."

Narberth chief Chris Flanagan who says in addition to learning first aid and CPR the kids got to tour the Montgomery county 9-1-1 call center, the Lower Merion police station, got a police K-9 demonstration, and got to visit the Galdwynne Fire Department's smoke trailer.

Lieutenant of operations Marie Eckman's children took part in the program.

"They loved every minute of it."

Her daughter, Mikayla, says the K-9 demonstration was really cool.

"He showed us how he sniffs out drugs and all."
