Jay Lloyd's Getaway: The Other Shore

By Jay Lloyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- As headlight to tailpipe summer traffic crawls to and from the Jersey shore, some might want to consider "The Other Shore," where there's room to ramble.

It's a playground of sunshine, fishing, crabbing, sandy beaches, top-tier restaurants and bars, crab houses and 6,000 miles of shoreline from the upper Chesapeake Bay to Cape Charles. It starts less than two hours from home. Any casual visitor who spends a few days roaming the Chesapeake and its rivers, creeks and ports has the same reaction.

"I just came down on vacation for a week and I just fell in love with the place."

The secret to crowd avoidance?

Few large hotels, most visitors stay at cozy B&B's, inns or on boats. You can find secluded spots for canoeing and kayaking, quaint town relaxation at Rock Hall, St. Michael's, Oxford or Yorktown. There's total resort pampering at Cambridge, the dynamic cities of Baltimore and Annapolis, the pristine beauty of wildlife preserves, boat rentals and rides up and down the bay. Charter fishing is a hit.

The Chesapeake Bay is truly "The other shore".
