Newly Established Commission For Women Meets For First Time

CITY HALL (CBS) -- A year after Philadelphia voters approved the creation of a Commission for Women, the members met on Wednesday for the first time.

Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown championed the Commission to address pay inequity, domestic violence and a general lack of representation on boards and leadership posts.

"My office and I kind of branded ourselves in acknowledging, if you're not at the table, you're on the menu," Brown said.

The Commission's first meeting was organizational, so it's not yet clear how they'll take on those issues, but the first activity they have planned is a public reading of the letter from a rape victim to her attacker.

Mayor Kenney has appointed Jovida Hill as executive director.

"I'm glad that I could help create a table for these dynamic women that represent the needs and aspirations of women around the city,"  mayor Kenney said.
