City Addresses Plans On How They Will Handle Peaceful Protest During DNC
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The American Civil Liberties Union has some questions for the city of Philadelphia about protests during the upcoming Democratic National Convention.
The first question is, will the city issue any permits for marches and demonstrations on Broad Street?
The city says no, there will be no blanket ban on demonstrations on Broad Street.
Another question is, will groups be arrested simply because they do not have a permit?
The city answers in part, 'we haven't arrested individuals or groups that are peacefully demonstrating just because they don't have a permit. Note that demonstrating without a permit is illegal and we're strongly encouraging all protesters to apply for a permit.'
City officials also say they have taken innumerable steps to protect demonstrators right to free speech, including decriminalization of numerous infractions.
