FDA Urges Older Adults To Avoid Taking Aspirin Due To Bleeding Risk

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Older adults and those with bleeding risk factors should choose antacids that don't contain aspirin.

The Food and Drug Administration wants to get the word out on the heels of eight cases of serious bleeding resulting in hospitalization.

Aspirin and non-steroidals should not be combined with antacids due to this increased risk of bleeding. Products covered by the announcement include familiar brands such as Alka-Seltzer and Bromo Seltzer.

Those at highest risk: people age 60 or older, those who have a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding problems and people taking a blood thinner or steroid medication.
