Philadelphia Woman Shares Orlando Massacre Survivor Story

by Ian Bush

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- We're hearing for the first time the heartbreaking story from a young Southwest Philadelphia woman who, along with one of her friends, survived the massacre in Orlando. Another friend was killed. They were separated from the gunman only by a bathroom stall door.

"I was begging for God to take the soul out of my body, because I didn't want to feel any more pain. I didn't want to get any more shots," recalled Patience Carter.

The refuge of the Pulse Nightclub bathroom turned into a terrifying trap for Carter. The Fox 29 intern, her friends, and others hiding in cubicles, had suffered gunshot wounds inflicted by an attacker who was still with them.

"People were getting hit by bullets. Blood was everywhere. Then there was a moment when he stopped," said Carter.

That's when the gunman called 911.

"Everybody could hear it who was in the bathroom who survived," She said.

Explaining this bloodshed was to make America stop bombing his country.

"He even spoke to us directly in the bathroom. He said, 'are there any black people in here?' 'I don't have a problem with black people; this is about my country. You guys have suffered enough,'" said Carter.

But just as police were about to storm the place, hours after the siege began...

"He said, 'hey, you' to someone on the floor inside the bathroom, and shot them. Shot another person, and then shot another person who happened to be directly behind me," she said.

Patience's friend Akira Murray, who'd just turned 18, didn't make it.

Patience and her friend Tiara Parker are still recovering from their wounds.
