Emergency Roadwork Slowing South Jersey Drivers

By Mike DeNardo

PENNSAUKEN, NJ (CBS) -- It could be a rough couple of weeks for South Jersey commuters, as emergency construction clogs a key artery.

PSE&G natural gas line work has the two right eastbound lanes closed on Routes 38 and 70, just beyond the Airport Circle. Four lanes will squeeze to two around the clock for more than a week, says New Jersey DOT spokesman Kevin Israel.

"The work going on in the Pennsauken area is emergency gas work being performed by PSE&G, that is expected to last for approximately the next ten days."

PSE&G spokewoman Brooke Houston says the maintenance work was prompted after a leak was detected.

"We did detect some gas in the area. We closely monitor that type of thing with leakmobiles and surveying our gas mains."

Houston says the area is safe and it's being closely monitored.

Eastbound evening drive traffic on Admiral Wilson Boulevard could be especially jammed. And Israel says this work is unrelated to a $9 million resurfacing of Route 70 through Cherry Hill.

"This is not that. That work will be starting next Monday, about two miles further down."

Drivers may want to consider finding another way through the area.
