SEPTA Unveils The Future Of Its Fare Collection System

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- SEPTA begins to roll-out its new electronic fare payment system next week.

On Monday, SEPTA riders can start to buy the tap-and-go fare cards called SEPTA Key. The roll-out will be limited to the first 10,000 customers, says SEPTA spokesman Andrew Busch.

"We do know that it's an adjustment for folks, especially folks who have been used to - for decades - using tokens. So that's why we want to bring it along gradually."

The reloadable fare cards can only be used for weekly or monthly transpasses right now.

"We're not getting into, at this point, what we call stored value for the travel wallet. So folks are not going to put a dollar number on there. They're going to just purchase that weekly and monthly pass."

SEPTA has no timetable for when the new fare system will be fully phased in, or when tokens will be phased out.
