Reported Coyote Sightings Increase At Jersey Shore

LOWER TOWNSHIP, NJ (CBS) – Some wily wildlife are making their presence known at the Jersey Shore.

This week several people who live in the Diamond Beach section of Lower Township told Eyewitness News about coyote sightings.

All of them giving descriptions nearly identical to this coyote spotted in nearby Wildwood Crest last summer.

"About 11:30 at night I heard a thud and I said who's that? I look out the door and (the coyote) was right on the porch here," says Emil Kowalchik who lives on North Station Avenue.

Two other residents of the same street report seeing coyotes and everyone says they don't seem afraid of people.

Tuesday night Jeannette Axelsson of Shunpike Road in Lower Township took a picture of a young coyote in her backyard.

A spokesperson for NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife says there have been no reports of coyotes showing aggression toward people or pets which might cause them to capture the animals.

Experts say coyotes live in every region of New Jersey and they recommend securing trash to prevent attracting coyotes and other wildlife.
