Philadelphia School Unions Consider Tentative Contracts

by Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Members of Philadelphia's public school principals union and the blue-collar workers union are voting on tentative contract agreements in the coming days.

Both unions made serious concessions in their last contract to help a school district drowning in red ink. Both have modest raises in their tentative agreements.

The blue collar workers, SEIU 32BJ, have a ratification meeting Saturday morning.

The principals, represented by Teamsters local 502, begin three nights of voting Wednesday night. Union president Rob McGrogan says the raises vary for his 490 members.

"That is one of the points of discontent. Because the compensation package is a combination of salary increases, steps and bonuses. It's unconventional compared to anything we have seen before," he said.

McGrogan says under the tentative agreement members would be eleven-month employees, but they would be paid over the entire year.

The district's largest union, the teachers union, has been without a new contract for nearly three years.
