SEPTA, Philabundance Team Up To Stop Hunger

by Molly Daly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Septa's teaming up with Philabundance for its 8th annual Stop Hunger at Your Station food drive, which starts Monday. The two-week campaign aims to help thousands of people in the Delaware Valley.

You might think this isn't the right time of year for a food drive, but Septa spokesperson Heather Redfern says hunger never takes a holiday.

"There's about 300,000 kids in our region who get free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch for school every day, so now that school's out, their parents are having to find two additional meals to feed them every day throughout the summer," she said.

Redfern says donations can be dropped into the red barrels at 43 locations, from Septa train stations to transportation centers.

"We can take canned or jarred proteins, like peanut butter, stews, beans, chile, tuna, salmon, canned fruits and vegetables, but anything in a jar just needs to be a plastic container," she said.

Or you can make a donation to Philabundance online. Details at: septa.org/events
