Doug Forrester: Unlikely Democrats Will Move To Replace Hillary

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - While the political world is waiting to see if former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be indicted for using a private email server during her time at the State Department, speculation is building in some circles that the Democrats could replace her with an alternative candidate atop their ticket in the Fall if the party believes she would lose to Donald Trump in the presidential election.

In 2002, the Democratic Party in New Jersey replaced Senator Robert Torricelli, who was trailing heavily in the polls to Republican Doug Forrester, with Frank Lautenberg after Torricelli received an admonishment by the Senate Ethics Committee. Lautenberg would go on to beat Forrester and serve in the Senate until 2013.

On Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, Rich Zeoli asked Doug Forrester if the Democrats could successfully replace Hillary Clinton with someone else later this year.

Forrester, while not ruling it out entirely, believes such a maneuver is unlikely.

"The presidential election is several magnitudes of greater consequence than even the United States Senate election. The federal election laws are such that I think it would be much more complicated and difficult to do in this race, 2016, than what was done in New Jersey in 2002. I think it's unlikely, although whether there are other actions that are taken prior to filing date, that remains to be seen. Clearly, there is a lot more flexibility with regard to what a political party can do before the filing deadline in the fall."
