Old Inquirer Building Could Become New Philly Police Headquarters
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- There's a new twist in the long-planned move of the Philadelphia police headquarters building from its current location at 8th and Race Streets. The city is looking at a new location in a well-known landmark on the city skyline.
Visitors often think that stately white tower, the high point to the north of City Hall, is some sort of important public building... and soon it may be.
For now, it is the empty former headquarters of Philadelphia's daily newspapers, but Mayor Jim Kenney says he likes the location for the police department.
"It is large enough to do a bunch of things, you could move police headquarters in there, a couple districts in center city could move in there, we could free up developable space in center city which is lucrative," said Kenney.
The current police headquarters, known-- and not affectionately-- as the roundhouse for its mid-century architectural style, has been slated to move for years.
Kenney's predecessor, Michael Nutter, began the process of moving it to West Philadelphia. Kenney says that still may happen but he's looking at the financial feasibility of the move to 400 North Broad.
