Delco Church Holds A Different Kind Of 'Sunday Service'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Delaware County church community replaced its normal Sunday service to put their faith into action. Their focus: feeding the hungry.

For the members of Valleypoint Church in Glen Mills, this Sunday before Memorial Day was about walking the walk.

"Get busy, get our hands dirty and actively engage in serving others. So this is a practical way that we can do that that has just been a lot of fun for our church," said Pastor Eric Koehler.

He says for the third year in a row they packaged 10,000 meals to be shipped to impoverished parts of the world through the organization Stop Hunger Now.

Ben Gerrish, with the organization, says the food they pack makes a difference.

"There's about 21,000 people that die everyday from hunger and hunger related diseases and we think that's completely unacceptable," he said.

The gym at Garnett Valley Middle School transformed, families manning assembly lines, filling bags.

"Rice and soy and vitamins. It's a mixture that can be shipped and has a long shelf-life," said Koehler.

A time to act and to make one think says 13-year-old Jessica. Serving alongside her dad she says she realized how lucky she is.

"It opens my eyes up when I have three meals a day and I'm packing them for other people," she said.
