What's Cooking on 1060: Grilling The Perfect Burger

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- As we head into Memorial Day, many folks are thinking about grilling season. That means trying to make the perfect burger -- and how to dress it up.

Dawn Bundick with Philadelphia's Hard Rock Cafe says to make the perfect burger...

"It all starts with the blend; usually an 80/20. 80% Angus, 20% brisket is the best blend because you get the most flavor with that."

She says don't be afraid to mix in vegetables like onions and peppers -- and spices.

"Some cumin, a little bit of jerk seasoning could spice it up; also, adding some maybe Chorizo sausage."

And whatever you do, don't press your spatula on the burger while grilling. It releases the juices.

"People think it's a quicker method of cooking but just let it take it's time! Use your thermometer, cook it to temperature, and you'll have a perfect burger all the time."

As for toppings, she gives us ideas of burgers you can make at home. For those who like heat, try the Atomic Burger.

"Atomic beer battered peppers, pepper jack cheese, carmelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, garlic. chipolte ketchup and chipolte mayo."

The Tango salsa burger...

"Andouille sausage, Monterrey jack cheese. a fried egg, salsa and a garlic aoli."

Or the Aloha burger...

"Spam, Monterrey jack cheese, a grilled pineapple ring, sweet soy glaze, guacamole and pico de gallo."

Or if you don't want to cook, Bundick points out those specialty burgers and five others are available at the Hard Rock Cafe for their "National Burger Tour" through the end of June.
