Campaign Urging Montco Residents To Use 9-1-1 For Any Response Kicks Off

HATBORO, Pa. (CBS) - When is it appropriate to dial 9-1-1?

That question is being answered by officials in Montgomery County as part of a new campaign that began Friday night in Hatboro.

It's called 9-1-1: One Call Does It All.

"We want people in the public to know you can call 9-1-1 for any response for police, fire or ambulance," explains Jen Cass with the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety, who organized the campaign.

Regardless of the situation she says:

"If your car was broken into overnight and you just discovered it you can call 9-1-1. Another example, noise in the middle of the night, suspicious noise or loud music, you can surely dial 9-1-1."

If you think it's quicker to call police station's directly, Hatboro Chief of Police James Gardner says you're wrong:

"It takes longer if you're dialing our ten digit numbers than if you call 9-1-1. That goes directly to our county dispatch center, and we're immediately dispatched."

He says if in doubt, just call. You won't get in trouble.

Another option: text to 9-1-1.

The campaign continues in June in North Wales and Lansdale. Officials hope to spread the message all throughout Montgomery County after that.
