New Study Looks At The Role Of Music In Child Development

KYW's Medical Reports Sponsored By Independence Blue Cross

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- There have been many studies looking at the role of music and development in children. A recent review looked at ten different studies that focused on infants and music. What they found is that music for preemies can improve their feeding habits.

In addition, playing music for premature babies may lessen their pain and improve feeding. It doesn't end there. There was also evidence that babies had less pain during needle sticks or circumcision when they listened to music during the procedure.

The best part of studies like this is that they look at something innocuous –like music—and can see a real or perceived value. There is no harm listening to music and we know that it can help adults with issues like high blood pressure and stress reduction.

It is not a surprise that the benefits can begin as early as infancy.
