By Kim Glovas

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- SEPTA is making major improvements to the existing bus loop at 61st and Pine Streets in West Philadelphia.

The $1.8 million upgrade is being paid for by Pennsylvania Act 89 which provides dedicated funding for public transportation improvements.

SEPTA's general manager Jeff Knueppel explained what changes will be made.

"New shelters, bike racks, energy efficient lighting, signage, much better landscaping, some safety and security improvements to the location, and just in general, a first class facility."

Among those who helped break ground on the new project was City Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell.

"This is absolutely lovely. It really will make a big difference in this neighborhood, people will be interested and really appreciate it."

The project is expected to be completed by Spring 2017.
