Philadelphia Spending More Than Budgeted For Overtime
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The state board that oversees Philadelphia's budget is sounding the alarm on overtime. A new report from PICA says the city has already spent more than what it budgeted for the whole fiscal year, and there's still two months left. And some of the big spenders are surprising.
The biggest overtime users are the police and fire departments -- as many might expect -- in a year that included the visit of Pope Francis. But Mural Arts? It has already spent nearly twice what it budgeted for overtime, although it's still a relatively modest $10,000.
The Department of Human Services has spent nearly $10-million on overtime, and that's after outsourcing all its case management.
A spokeswoman says it's looking into how to reduce the use of overtime in the future.
Meanwhile, City Controller Alan Butkovitz -- an occassional critic of overtime -- has spent $68,000, 25 percent more than he budgeted for.
