Phillies Players Lace Up For Charity Bowling Tournment

by Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Many of the Phillies will be taking off their cleats and lacing up their bowling shoes tonight, for charity.

It’s the major fundraiser of the year for Philadelphia Futures, the nonprofit that helps low-income students get to college and succeed there.

It’s a sold-out celebrity bowling tournament at South Bowl.

Phils catcher Carlos Ruiz is the host, and Philadelphia Futures Executive Director Joan Mazzotti says Chooch has personally sponsored six of the students.

“That means they will have an account of $6,000 that they will be able to draw down on, once they enroll in college, that will be used for their books and other college-related expenses,” said Mazzotti.

Ruiz this year is being inducted into the Philadelphia Futures hall of Fame for his six-year commitment to the organization.

So, who is the Phillies’ best bowler?

“I have to say, Ryan Howard from the very beginning has been spectacular on the lanes,” claims Mazzotti

The event called “Get in the Game” has raised nearly $2 million dollars for Philadelphia Futures over the last 16 years.
