US Coast Guard Rescues Sailor Off Coast Of Atlantic City
ATLANTIC CITY, Nj, (CBS) -- A French sailor attempted a solo sail, from New York to England, that ended off the coast of Atlantic City on Monday.
The United States Coast Guard rescued Olivier Jehl when his boat ran into a submerged object and began to sink. Jehl utilized an emergency raft and a position indicating radio to alert the Coast Guard.
After his 21-foot sailboat sank, a helicopter crew from the Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City reached Olivier around 4:40 a.m., 90 miles off the coast.
He was rescued and taken to Atlantic City with no reported medical issues.
"This case was a perfect example of how to be prepared for the worst case scenario," said the Commanding Officer of Air Station Atlantic City, Captian Peter Mingo. He explained that Jehl's emergency equipment and preparedness are the reasons why he is alive today.
