Activists Head To State Capitol To Rally For Tougher Gun Restriction Laws

By Mark Abrams

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Demonstrators boarded buses in the Philadelphia area late Monday morning to join activists from across the state for a rally in the capitol seeking tougher gun restriction laws.

Six women and a toddler boarded a bus that was 45 minutes late in arriving at 16th and Market Streets for the ride to Harrisburg.

Fred Pinguel, from Philadelphia Ceasefire, is one of the organizers of the event.

"We're trying to close a loophole that allows for the private sale of long guns, that's any gun with a barrel length of 16 inches or longer without background checks."

Pinguel acknowledged it has been an uphill struggle as lawmakers have turned aside attempts to amend the state's background check law.

And, with lawmakers still unable to reach consensus on a new state budget, gun background checks aren't even on the back-burner.

"It's a challenge but we think that this is the time, and it's time for every gun and every sale to require a background check."
