Chinese Lantern Festival Adds New Jaw-Dropping Performance

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- More than 25,000 people have visited the glowing Chinese lanterns on temporary display outdoors at Franklin Square since it opened three weeks ago. The evening festival runs through June 12. There is a performance element with the price of admission and there's a new line up.

The crowd was amazed, many asking how did he do it?

The face changing performer mysteriously switched masks quicker than a blink of an eye. Watch out for Mr. Lee the clown, he has a basket of eggs, plate spinning, juggling and a whole lot more.

The performers are from China. There are two shows nightly 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Historic Philadelphia, Inc. provides programming to Franklin Square year round.

"Because Franklin Square has such a close connection to Chinatown, that's one of the reasons why we thought that bringing this festival to Philadelphia would be a wonderful thing to really explore the Chinese culture and that connection between Franklin Square and Chinatown," said President and CEO Amy Needle.

The Philadelphia Chinese lantern Festival features 28 displays including panda paradise, the wind mill gallery, and a giant yellow dragon.
