Pacifico Family Cuts Checks To Help High School Seniors Pay For College

By Steve Tawa

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- An icon in the auto dealership field handed out more checks for scholarships, to help Philadelphia area high school students with their post-secondary tuition.

Kerry Pacifico, who graduated from South Philadelphia High School in 1941, he's about to go to his 75th high school reunion - has been the driving force in gifting nearly $2-million to students, since he cut the first checks in 1964, in memory of his dad.

"So we gave $1000 away. Today, we're giving $137,000,"

It's going to top students in the class of 2016 at 25 area schools, including 19-year-old Casey Williams at Mr. Pacifico's alma mater.

"This opportunity is amazing. And so, this is a blessing," Williams said.

He also has big plans for the future.

"I will go to Temple on a full ride scholarship to play football."

He plans to study sports medicine. And yes, Casey is built like the linebacker he will play. His counselor at South Philly High, Emily Goodman is grateful that the Pacifico Family Foundation is giving back.

"It's obvious he sees that the kids are in need, and they want to go on and succeed, and this is an incredible opportunity," Goodman said.

Schools Superintendent William Hite says "it's important to recognize people who give us stuff," to support the future of the community. But Dr. Hite also told students they should do their part by helping others, as they were helped.

"Remember, lift as you climb, and pay it forward."
