New Procedure Provides A Painless And Permanent Way To Get A Better Body

By Stephanie Stahl

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Just in time for summer, there's a new way to get a better body. It's a painless and permanent fat reduction procedure available in our area. One Berks County mom calls the procedure a miracle.

"I love it, it's amazing, I fit in these," says Becky Evans showing off her jeans.

Her old size 10 jeans are way too big now for the 29 year old mother of two.

"I lost about 2 inches," says Becky. "It's great."

After having her two babies recently and gaining 45 pounds, Becky lost the weight but struggled with her belly fat.

"With working out and eating right it wasn't helping much," she said. "Right in the midsection, right above my
C-section scar which is down here, so it pouched out."

Becky says she got her figure back after getting a procedure called UltraShape. The procedure uses sound waves that destroy fat cells.

"You can get 25 percent permanent reduction in fat," says Plymouth Meeting dermatologist Dr. Marlene Mash.

Dr. Mash says unlike other procedures that either freeze, heat or surgically remove fat, UltraShape is non-invasive and painless.

The individual fat cells are targeted by this ultrasonic technology," explains Dr. Mash. "They explode the fat cells which go into very small particles of triglycerides and our wonderful bodies take care of it through the lymphatic system."

But if fat turns in to triglycerides, could it end up in the blood stream and pose a danger?

"There's never been any reported cases where triglycerides that are broken down from the fat cells get into the body," said Dr. Mash.

Potential side effects do include mild skin redness and irregularities. And while the Food and Drug Administration has cleared the technology for the abdomen, it can be used on other areas but the results vary and aren't always dramatic.

Becky had 3 sessions.

"You don't feel anything," she says. "It's just kind of a warm sensation rolling around on your belly."

Results usually show up in 10 days. Now that she has a slimmed down belly, Becky has replaced those size 10 jeans with size 4 jeans.

"It's awesome, I love it," she says. "It's a miracle worker."

UltraShape costs about $3500 and there are several one hour sessions required about two weeks apart.
