Events This Weekend Bring Awareness To Williams Syndrome

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Two events this weekend highlight a rare genetic condition that blesses and curses those who have it. A child born with Williams Syndrome lights up a room, says Melissa Murphy of Wynnewood.

"Their enthusiasm for life, happiness, kindness, and most importantly, perhaps, their empathy is something that is quite remarkable," Murphy said. And they often have unusual musical abilities.

But Murphy -- whose five-year-old daughter Rose has Williams Syndrome -- says there are serious health complications.

"Many children with Williams Syndrome have quite severe cardiovascular issues," she said, as well as learning disabilities.

Researchers are trying to find ways to treat the cardiovascular issues, and exploring why children with Williams have difficulties processing visual-spatial information.

The Phillies hold Williams Syndrome Awareness night at Saturday at Citizens Bank Park. On Sunday, a fundraising walk is scheduled at Wilson Farm Park in Wayne.
