Trump-Christie '16? Not A Good Team, NJ Republicans Tell One Poll

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (CBS) - Now that billionaire Donald Trump has emerged as the presumptive Republican Presidential nominee, attention turns to his selection of a running mate.

One potential VP candidate is not being recommended by people in his home state.

Polls have not been kind to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie in recent months. And a new one from Monmouth University is no different, although this one doesn't measure Christie's popularity or effectiveness on the job.

Instead, the question was put strictly to Garden State Republicans: What kind of effect would Christie have on a national ticket?

"We found that only 15-percent of New Jersey Republican voters said that Chris Christie would actually help a Trump ticket," poll director Patrick Murray told KYW Newsradio. "In fact, more than twice as many, 41-percent, said he could actually drag Trump down."

37-percent thought it really wouldn't make a difference either way.

"If you think about it, there's probably nobody out there who could really kill Trump's buzz," Murray continues. "But New Jersey Republicans think that Christie might just be the guy and these are Trump's supporters."

Not to say such a pairing is considered likely. Christie's name has not appeared on any speculative short list on VP hopefuls, and even the Governor downplays the possibility of being asked.

Trump says he's looking for someone with the governmental experience he lacks, but the only Governor he's suggesting as a good running mate is Ohio's John Kasich.
