What's Cooking on 1060: South Street Spring Festival

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- May is festival season in Philadelphia. There will be crazy antics and even a restaurant opening happening during this weekend's South Street Spring Festival.

Mike Harris, executive director of the South Street Headhouse District, encourages folks to come out to South Street on Saturday, May 7, where the streets will be closed for their Spring Festival.

"Well, this really is Philly's longest block party," Harris says. "It goes from Front Street out to 8th Street, and then it's Headhouse Square -- so it's 12 blocks of food, music, drink and shopping."

Each year they add something new to the festival. This year, they'll be having a Philly Taco Eating Contest at 5 p.m. on the sideshow stage.

"For those who don't know, a 'Philly Taco' is a full size Jim's cheesesteak rolled up in a Lorenzo's oversized pizza slice."

Harris says the fesitval has grown larger each year.

"We started four years ago not knowing what it would be, but it's really turned into being a large crowd," he says. "We expect around 30,000-50,000 people there."

With so many people around, he says it's the perfect time to launch a new South Street restaurant.

"Milkboy is opening that weekend, so that's the big new restaurant/bar opening at 4th and South," Harris says, "so they're going to have their grand opening, as well."
