Sports Legends Of Delaware County Museum Gets New Home
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A treasure trove of Delaware County sports memorabilia celebrates its new home on Saturday.
Walk into the Radnor Township Municipal Building to pay your taxes, and you might think you wandered into a sports museum. The lobby and hallways are the new home of the Sports Legends of Delaware County Museum, formerly housed at the now-defunct Granite Run Mall.
Jerseys and rarities from Mike Scioscia, Danny Murtaugh, and Billy "White Shoes" Johnson are there.
Museum board member Jim Vankoski says an exclusive item is a large horsehide that Mickey Vernon had his 1957 Red Sox teammates and visiting players sign.
"We think it's the most unique piece of baseball memorabilia in the United States today," he says. "And it's worth the trip here just to see this. They're signed by teams. This is Detroit, Roger Maris was a rookie with the Cleveland Indians that year. Here's Cleveland, the Yankees down here."
Vankoski pointed to a Seattle Mariners jersey loaned by Aston native Ben Davis.
"Somebody would say, 'Well, how come Delaware County has such a tremendous sports heritage?' And Ben is a good example -- because there's a picture, 1906 photograph of great-grandfather of Ben Davis was Upland's Fred Seaman."
The museum has signed a two-year lease with Radnor. A grand opening ceremony is being held Saturday at 11 am.
