Homebrew Competition Of Biblical Proportions Set For This Weekend

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- When it comes to beer, it's the battle of the faiths this weekend. Members of two religious congregations are hosting a competition to find out who makes the best homebrew.

This Saturday, Rabbi Eli Freedman of Rodeph Shalom Synagogue on North Broad Street says his congregations will host the 3rd annual Biblical Brewoff.

"It's an interfaith homebrew competition," he says.

Competitors are Team Moses from Rodeph Shalom, Team Jesus from St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Roxborough, and a new team this year.

"Team Eve is an all women's interfaith team comprised of members of St. Timothy's and members of Rodeph Shalom,"Freedman says, "all women who brewed their own beer this year."

Rabbi Freedman says now in their third year, participants are really learning a lot.

"What you find with interfaith relationships is that at first you spend a lot of time just agreeing on everything and it's all sort of happy and fun, but as you really become friends more, you begin to discover the differences, and push each other a little bit on some of your issues," he says. "And I personally believe when you've had a beer or two, it sort of lowers some of those inhibitions and allows you to get a little more real in your conversations with each other!"

Tickets are $25 and can be bought online at rodephshalom.org
