Food Truck Review: No. 43

UNDRGRND DONUTS

Who doesn't love a homemade donut shop? I'm not talking about a chain outlet, where the donuts are shipped in from offsite. I'm talking about places like Federal Donuts or Beiler's Bakery at the Reading Terminal Market – places where you get the delicious dessert two minutes after it emerges piping hot from the oven.

Undrgrnd Donuts takes that idea and puts it on the road. The truck, which does food festivals, catered bar mitzvahs and an occasional turn at Love Park, produces a dozen flavors a day – so good you won't care if they give you a coronary.

They're two bucks a piece, a dozen for $20. We recommend the French toast donut which tastes like, well, French toast, with cinnamon and maple syrup. It's warm and sweet and a perfect pairing for that cup of coffee. We also loved a tribute to our local NCAA champ – the strawberry Nova, which was a whipped-cream filled delight covered with vanilla glaze, fresh strawberries and diced mint. Superb.

Undrgrnd Donuts (yeah, that's how they really spell it) will be in my Food Truck Frenzy Finals at the Valley Forge Casino on May 14. That means you get to sample them for free. You can follow them on Twitter at @UndrgrndDonuts.
