Phillies Open Series in St. Louis, Looking For Seventh Straight Win

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- These are good days for the Phillies.

The Phils bring a six-game winning streak into St. Louis tonight for the opener of a four game series.

Pete Mackanin's squad beat Cleveland 2-1 on Sunday at Citizens Bank Park to complete a weekend sweep. This was the second straight series sweep for the Phils.

This surge has improved the Phillies to 15-10 this season. They remain in third place in National League East, but they have pulled to within 2 1/2 games of first-place Washington.

Jeremy Hellickson will get the start for the Phillies tonight. The veteran righthander is 2-1 this season with a 3.81 ERA. He has been exceptional on the road. In his three starts away from South Philadelphia, Hellickson is 2-0 with an ERA of 0.96. In his last start, he pitched seven shutout innings in a 3-0 win in Washington. Hellickson allowed just two hits and struck out eight in the win.

The Cardinals are 12-13 on the season and they will start veteran righthander Adam Wainwright tonight. After missing much of the 2015 season with an Achilles injury, Wainwright has struggled so far here in 2016. He is 1-3 and he has an ERA of 7.16.

KYW's Matt Leon spoke with Kevin Cooney of the Bucks Country Courier Times about what has keyed this early season success for the Phillies.
