PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- There have been federal breakfast programs initiated around the country, and there is no doubt that for certain at risk children there is a need to provide proper nutrition especially during formative years, but what types of food are best from a health standpoint?

There has been a great deal of comment on this, with some saying that cereal would lead to weight gain, and others suggesting it could improve academic performance. According to a report in the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, a program in New York, which focused on cereal as the key breakfast food, found the breakfast program wasn't associated with weight gain, but it wasn't linked to better academic performance either.

There have been studies showing a well-balanced breakfast with fruits and vegetables can improve academic performance.
