Crockett Gives Winning Trophy To 7-Year-Old Heart Hero
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- To be honest, Alex deserved a trophy. Alex Forss, 7, was born with a congenital heart defect called tricuspid atresia and had three open heart surgeries by the age of three and has undergone 10 surgeries altogether. Forss has some limitations, but he is encouraged by his parents to experience life the way a 7-year-old should.
Crockett of our Country station, 92.5 XTU, who won the media home run derby, gave his championship trophy to Alex.
Christina Crews of the Heart association told CBSPhilly.com this was the first time anyone has ever donated their championship trophy.
"Alex was so happy, but honestly could barely carry it," said Crews. "That didn't stop him from trying though."
The 19th annual Richie Ashburn Memorial Home Runs For Heart is on May 2nd and May 3rd at Citizens Bank Park. The public is invited to come out, take swings, shag fly balls, visit the Phillies' clubhouse, take a stadium tour, bid on auction items, and more.
The event was created in 1997 after the passing of Richie Ashburn. The event also honors announcer Harry Kalas. Both died of heart disease.
Proceeds from the two-day event benefit the local research and community education efforts of the AHA of Southeastern Pennsylvania. CBS Radio is a media partner of the Richie Ashburn Memorial Home Runs For Heart and was out in full force for media day.
